Found and Adopted a Stray Feral Cat | New Years Day Present

Pepper found cat

On New Year’s Day my Mum and Mike found a stray cat, it was hot, thirsty and hungry. It had no collar either, so they took the cute soft meowing cat home. The next day when the shops and vet opened they took the cat to the local vet to get a check out and also to see if someone had reported it missing, but there was nothing on their records and the vet had a look he said that it was around 6 or so months old and had no microchip on it either.

So being an animal and cat lover I heard about the cat and I said that I was only too happy to keep it or look after it until an owner was found, although I had a big problem, I already had a two year old cat that was a bit timid, soft and slightly over loved as he was over weight too hehe. So the true test would be to see if I could get this new cat and my old cat to adjust and not kill each other as it’s not always easy to put two older cats together, especially I had no idea of the back ground or history of this new cat, not knowing if it had been used to other cats, dogs etc and the vet had mentioned as the cat tried to rip his arms off, that he was feral and had been loose for a Long time. My old cat “Jasper” had never had another cat or dog around so things could be very interesting around my house now on!!

So over the next few days and weeks I had to slowly introduce the old cat to my cat Jasper, which was a very slow process and on top of that was keeping two cats in separate areas, giving both cats time with me alone, also to make sure Jasper was ok and happy and that the new cat got used to and liked me too, which can be a hard thing as apparently cats are different to other animals or dogs that they pick you and not the other way around, so if a cat doesn’t like you they can run off and find a more suitable home, and that’s not that you are a bad person, but just like humans if your not a good match with their personality and temperament it’s not going to be an happy home or cat.

The cats met through glass doors then fly wire then from chicken wire as I have an outdoor cat area that a friend built for me a few years back. I started to leave Jasper outside as he is used to that and the new cat in the outdoor cat area and the cats seemed ok after a while, a few hisses were exchanged but nothing too serious which I was happy about. I used http://google.com.au some info on introducing two cats together and got some advice from friends also so I had been doing the right thing but was still going to be a slow process.
After about 19 days of this Mum and I decided it was time the cats met face to face in a room, so with brooms, air freshener sprays (they seem to hate the sound when spray’s used), buckets of water and towels we put the cats together and we were happily surprised the cats just had a bit of a hiss but were ok together, no fights and no blood or rushing to the vet. So after repeating this a few times and for longer periods and then we left them alone they still were ok and got better and better each time until they were playing chasey around things.

I have now named the new cat “Pepper” and can report that they are now both outside during the day and with each day both cats are getting calmer and friendlier, I have still been having them sleep alone but soon will try to see if they can both sleep in the garage as then I can have my Laundry back and not so much hassle, time and cleaning up after them.

So the hard work, being patient, it now looks like I am the proud owner of Pepper and he is such a sweet cat, still a little feral but you can call it attitude and he gets on well with Jasper and I now, even sitting on my knee for a cuddle each night. I am also happy we helped a stray feral cat out from maybe not such a nice start in his life and hope that he enjoys living in his new home and has made a new cat friend Jasper hehe.

This is dedicated to all cat and animal lovers..
